Smoky Day 2026
From 30 March to 1 April 2026, the “Smoky Day” organized by the Leibniz ScienceCampus (LSC) BioSmoke took place at the Institute of Meteorology of the University of Leipzig. The event combined the third project meeting of the LSC with an international, interdisciplinary workshop. The focus was on scientific exchange on atmospheric smoke and other aerosol particles emitted by vegetation fires.
More than 50 researchers from 15 institutes and 9 countries presented current research in the form of talks and poster presentations, covering topics ranging from combustion experiments to the long-range transport of smoke layers and their atmospheric interactions. The program was complemented by joint activities aimed at further networking as well as a guided tour of the Leipzig Botanical Garden.
In a final discussion session, various open research questions on atmospheric smoke were discussed among representatives from different disciplines. Overall, the “Smoky Day” was considered a highly valuable contribution to interdisciplinary scientific exchange. A continuation of the “Smoky Day” is therefore planned for autumn 2027.
